Both the Museo Palazzo Rosso and the Museo Palazzo Bianco stand out as being two of Genoa's most important art galleries and museums. Here you can enjoy art works by countless celebrated artists, many of which are Italian in origin and displayed in spacious, lavish surroundings.

The 'Red Palace', like its white counterpart the Palazzo Bianco, was built in the 17th century for a wealthy local family and donated by the Duchess of Galliera to the city at the end of the 19th century. The richly decorated rooms of the palace make a splendid backdrop to the exhibits, which include a collection of frescoes, sculptures, porcelain and paintings. The work of Venetian artists, Tintoretto and Veronese, are joined by other famous painters, including the works of celebrated local artists and Van Dyck, who had a close association with Genoa. The Museo Palazzo Rosso also boasts a comprehensive photographic archive. Access to the rooftop allows visitors to admire the city below.

The 'White Palace' was originally built by the Grimaldi family and presented to the City of Genoa by the Duchess of Galliera in the 19th century for use as a public art gallery. Today, the Palazzo Bianco is home to a vast collection of European paintings, dating from the 12th to the 17th centuries. In particular, the gallery is home to a fine collection of local artists' work from the 17th and 18th centuries, including paintings by the likes of Castiglione.

Genoa's Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts (Museo dell'Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti) displays many impressive works of art dating from the 14th century, including the works of Piola, Cambiaso, Baciccia, Grechetto, Assereto, De Ferrari and Strozzi.

In 1958, Marquis Paolo and Franco Spinola donated both the 16th-century mansion and its contents to the Italian State. As well as the museum's fine collection of paintings, the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola also has a good selection of silver, ceramics and furniture on display.
